Carragher criticises Arnold’s behaviour at Real Madrid
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Reds full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and his representatives encouraged Real Madrid to try to sign him in January to “secure themselves” when he leaves for free at the end of his contract.
Arnold has long been a Real Madrid fan, especially since the player’s contract expires at the end of this season.
While it has been speculated that Real Madrid would try to sign Arnold for free next summer, Los Blancos made a surprise bid on Tuesday when they asked Liverpool to sign the player in January.
Liverpool immediately rejected the offer and are still in talks with Arnold over a new contract.
Carragher wrote on his X account: “The most important thing for Liverpool in 2025 is to win the Premier League. No player’s contract or future should get in the way of that.”
He added: “I love Trent Alexander-Arnold as a person and a player, but his representatives told Real Madrid to make an offer and the player knew Liverpool would reject it.”
“It’s an attempt to secure themselves when Alexander-Arnold leaves for free. Again, it’s not something the club or the fans need with a big game coming up (against United next Sunday),” Carragher concluded.
